Current and Recent Projects

Flowonics works with a wide range of customers in the rail and associated industries, providing exceptional engineered solutions. Brief summaries of some of our recent projects are shown in the list below. If you are interested to find out more about any of the projects in the list, please follow the links for more information.

Flowonics has developed a Controlled Emission Toilet (CET) installation for Mk III rolling stock in conjunction with Smart Rail Services, to replace the current 'ballast flush' system on these vehicles. This is the first time a 'modern' CET system has been designed for these vehicles and reflects Flowonics' capability for providing innovative Engineered Solutions in the rail industry. The new CET system will enable the toilets on Mk III coaches, which are in daily service on High Speed Trains and locomotive hauled sets with numerous operators, to be updated to the same standard as those in modern trains.

The new Flowonics CET system provides a number of significant benefits over the existing installations, particularly in relation to the environmental impact of the vehicles. The new toilet installed as part of the CET system is of the vacuum flush type which dramatically reduces water usage for flushing, typically by 75% or more. As a consequence the volume of water used per toilet per day is significantly reduced and enables a reduction in the amount of water that needs to be carried within the vehicles themselves. This generates a small reduction in the Tare weight of the vehicle, which when compounded over a 7-9 coach train will equate to small savings in fuel usage and brake component wear. The CET system also allows toilet waste to be released in a controlled manner at a location where it can be disposed of and treated, rather than being distributed around the rail network where it creates hazards for track workers and is a visual nuisance to passengers/staff.

Having undertaken detailled Engineering Feasibility and Preliminary Design works, Flowonics is now in contact with a number of industry partners to undertake the first installation of the system on a suitable vehicle. If you are interested in being part of this process please Contact Us. For more information on the CET system and its benefits, please click here.

Working with Bombardier Transportation, Flowonics has designed and supplied an innovative re-circulating drip tank which has dramatically reduced fuel oil usage on QSK19 power units. Bombardier identified the issue on power units fitted to their Class 220 'Voyager', Class 221 'Super Voyager' and Class 222 'Meridian' units and the new drip tank has now been fitted on all vehicles in these fleets. Working with Bombardier Transportation, Flowonics undertook a complete redesign of coolant and engine oil hoses on the QSK19 power units fitted to Class 220 'Voyager' and Class 221 'Super Voyager' units. Having undertaken a review of failure data Flowonics was able to identify a range of issues with the original systems and components which significantly contributed to their unreliability. Uprated hoses, better able to withstand the operating conditions, together with simplified hose arrangements were supplied by Flowonics and the incidence of failures of these items on the modified power units has been dramatically reduced.
